The public website is designed to be free and useful. Magazine and website advertising are paid promotional products, marketplace sales are transactions with the named vendor, and every public submission is reviewed before publication.
Accounts and free listings
Is it free to use The Whereabouts website?
Yes. Browsing is free, and basic online submissions such as businesses, jobs, classifieds, property, accommodation and event listings can be submitted without a basic listing fee. Every public submission is reviewed before publication.
Do I need an account to submit something?
Yes. A free account keeps your listings, applications, advertising bookings, artwork, orders and invoices together. You can browse the public site without signing in.
Are website submissions published immediately?
No. Public submissions stay pending until they are reviewed for completeness, relevance, safety and obvious rights or policy concerns. You receive an email when an approved submission is published.
Can I edit a listing after submitting it?
Yes. Open My Whereabouts, choose Listings and use Edit / images. A material change may return to review before it becomes public.
What photos should I upload?
Upload a sharp wide banner first, ideally at least 1600 × 900 pixels, followed by useful gallery images. Businesses, restaurants, accommodation and deals also need a separate clear logo that is not cropped.
Why does a listing start in Kimberley?
Kimberley, Northern Cape, South Africa is the default because it is the publication’s home market. Change the city or region when the real listing is elsewhere, enter the actual street or area and review the map before submitting.
Why is “use my current location” not available?
Browser and IP location can resolve to the wrong town. The form therefore starts with a clear Kimberley default and asks you to enter and verify the real address instead of silently publishing an inaccurate location.
Can I sign in with Google or social media?
Email and password sign-in is the dependable account method. Google or social sign-in is shown only after the relevant provider app, consent screen, domain and OAuth credentials have been verified and connected.
Magazine and advertising
Does a free website listing include the monthly magazine?
No. The website and magazine are different products. A free listing makes information searchable online. Magazine advertising is paid because the publication is designed and actively distributed through available subscriber and marketing channels.
When is magazine content due?
Cleared payment and final content or artwork are due by the 15th for the applicable issue. The monthly publication is scheduled for release on the 25th.
What artwork must I supply?
The booking card and confirmation email show the exact finished and supplied dimensions. Supply a press-ready RGB PDF, PNG or JPG at 300 dpi, include the stated 3 mm bleed where required and keep important text and logos inside the safe area.
Can The Whereabouts design my magazine advert?
Basic advert design is included for eligible paid magazine placements with up to two revision rounds. You must still supply accurate wording, a suitable logo, usable images and any offer or contact details by the deadline.
Can an editor simply exclude my paid advert?
A paid booking is not selected according to personal preference. A valid booking receives the purchased placement when payment clears and its content is lawful, technically suitable, on time and compliant with the advertising terms.
Can I advertise for three months?
Yes. A three-month prepaid magazine booking receives 20% off when all three months are paid in advance. Verified BNI members or current Owlytic marketing-retainer clients also qualify for 20% off the standard monthly rate. Discounts cannot be combined.
How does monthly website advertising work?
Choose a named website position and month, create an account, upload the required banner, add your wording and optional destination link, then pay. The advert remains private until The Whereabouts approves it.
Does a website advert appear and expire automatically?
Yes. Once its order is paid and its display status is approved, the advert becomes eligible only in its booked section and month. It is removed from that monthly rotation automatically when the period ends.
Can The Whereabouts upload website artwork for a client?
Yes. The publishing team can open the client’s order, upload or replace artwork, edit the headline, message, button and destination link, then approve it for the booked month.
Can I link an advert to WhatsApp?
Yes. A complete secure WhatsApp link such as a wa.me URL may be used as the optional destination. A website, booking or product page is also suitable.
Are views, clicks or enquiries guaranteed?
No. Advertising purchases a defined position and period, not a guaranteed result. Audience figures are descriptive and may change; performance depends on creative quality, offer, timing and audience behaviour.
Jobs, events and marketplace
Can I post a job for free?
Yes. A basic website vacancy can be submitted free for review. Paid magazine vacancy placements are separate products under the current rate card.
How are random job applications reduced?
Employers can add structured screening questions and required criteria to a vacancy. Applicants answer privately through their account, and the employer reviews those answers in My Whereabouts rather than exposing personal details publicly.
Can I list an event for free?
Yes. A standard event listing can be submitted free for review. Ticketing, seating, QR tickets and scanning are separate transaction services when enabled for an organiser.
Who is responsible for event information?
The organiser is responsible for dates, times, venue details, ticket terms, safety information and lawful delivery of the event. Users should confirm important details with the organiser before travelling or paying.
How much does it cost to sell online?
Seller registration and basic product listing are free, subject to approval. The platform commission is 8.5% on completed marketplace orders.
When are seller balances processed?
Eligible balances from completed orders are grouped at the monthly close on the last Friday when the full available balance is at least R150. Sellers do not request withdrawals. Verification, exceptions and the payout report remain visible to The Whereabouts team.
Who arranges delivery or courier services?
Each vendor sets and fulfils its own delivery or collection methods, charges, dispatch times and customer updates. The seller must make those terms clear before purchase.
Who handles product returns and refunds?
The vendor is the supplier of its products and handles fulfilment, returns, refunds, warranties and its own published seller policies, subject to applicable consumer law. The platform can keep order records and route a support concern but cannot remove legal rights or responsibilities imposed by law.
Does PayFast split a payment directly between vendors?
No. Customers use PayFast at checkout, while marketplace commission, completed-order eligibility and seller payout records are managed separately by the platform.
What is the difference between the shop and restaurant ordering?
The shop is for vendor products and marketplace orders. Restaurant ordering is for menus, collection or delivery from participating food businesses. Event tickets, accommodation bookings and other reservation products use their own details and fulfilment rules.
Payments, privacy and help
When is a booking confirmed?
A booking is confirmed only after payment has cleared and the order reaches the appropriate paid status. An unpaid basket, failed payment or cancelled order does not reserve stock, space or a publication position.
Why does a cancelled advertising order remain visible?
The account keeps the order as a record, but clearly marks it cancelled and removes the payment action. Start a new booking if you still want that placement.
Where can I find an invoice?
Open My Whereabouts and choose Orders & invoices, or use the invoice link on the relevant advertising booking. The invoice reflects the order record and payment status at the time you view it.
How are email and WhatsApp subscriptions recorded?
Email and WhatsApp permissions are stored separately. Email requires confirmation, while WhatsApp requires an explicit opt-in and a valid number. You can update your preferences or unsubscribe without cancelling your website account.
Are uploaded job applications public?
No. Applications, CVs and screening answers are private to the applicant, the relevant employer account and authorised platform support or moderation personnel where needed.
How do I report incorrect information or request help?
Use the Help or Contact page and choose the closest topic. Include the listing, order or booking number and enough detail to investigate. Do not publish passwords, payment credentials or private identity information in a public listing.
